The rather crude pressed glass square “lemon squeezer” feet made by a pincher in the 18th century was a task for one man. Mechanised pressing of glass began in the United states in the early 19th century and was being widely utilised in Birmingham and Stourbridge by 1825-30. Money was to be made as despite this requiring two men to operate a press the rates of production increased five-fold.
These jelly glasses were manufactured in a three-piece mould. They have however been fire polished to reduce the evidence of moulding and the panels and pontil scar (made when the glass was fire polished) have been hand polished. Moulding may have increased production. but an effort was being made to retain a high standard finish.
