Geoffrey Birks was born and raised in West Yorkshire and trained at the northern powerhouse that is the Bradford College of Art. most famous for having been the training ground for David Hockney. arguably the greatest living artist. Birks foresaw the imminent collapse of northern working class communities and immortalised them in his art. There is a nostalgic melancholy that mingles in with the joy of this painting.

Eric Knowles Comments. My mother knew LS Lowry. she used to share her Nuttalls Mintoes with the great man. This exudes the same joy in Northern working class life as that portrayed by Lowrie in my home town of Colne and his Stretford and Salford.
