Description: Two antique clothes fasteners – silver gilt ornate clothes fasteners with hooks for clothes attachment, one with a three domed motif and the other with a rectangular frame appearance with seven knops to the edge. The decoration on the rectangular hook is interesting as it looks like the ‘eye’ it would have been paired with.
Size and Weight: Longest 25mm, 5g total
Reference: Gorden Mills, Detector Finds No. 1, p33
Features and Provenance: Before the use of buttons, brooches, toggles or simply ties were the main form of clothes fastener. As clothing became more elaborate and costly, better types of fasteners had to be developed. The Romans used brooches, the Saxons hooks and brooches, then these methods died out, but were then resurrected in the Tudor age. Hooks came back into fashion and some were very ornate, as are our examples. Simple forms probably just hooked through the material the other side but our examples would probably have had equally ornate metal rings to attach to, nowadays known as ‘eyes.’
