Condition: VF+, a rare and sought after piece. A beautiful patina has developed to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as scratches and some surface pitting.

Description: A fine bronze socketed axe head featuring a rectangular body which extends to a slightly curved cutting edge on one side and a wide, scooped mouth on the other. It has been further enriched by a moulded collar to one side.

Size and Weight: 125mm, 205g

Features and Provenance: Ex TimeLine auctions, previously from a North West London collection acquired in the 1980s.

As the smelting of metals progressed in the ancient world, it was only natural that weapons would have been the first items to be made and highly prized. The casting method was used and the casting seam is visible above and below where the two halves have been joined. The small loop would have been used to secure the axe head to a wooden shaft with leather or twine. It is thought that the handles of Bronze Age axe heads were made from one piece of L-shaped wood, such as a gnarled tree-root or the point where a branch joins the main trunk.  Whether the wear is from its use or through being a ground find, we will never know, but this extremely historical artefact conjures up a myriad of scenarios.

Condition Summary. This varies with the age of the artefact and there are grades between

Extremely Fine (EF). Very slight traces of wear. all parts of pattern etc present. visible and clear

Very Fine (VF). Some signs of wear on the higher parts of the relief. all parts of pattern etc present. but may be worn

Fine (F). Wear on the artefact and parts of item and pattern etc may be missing or not visible
