Features and Provenance:

George I, born on 28th May 1660, was the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain. He inherited the throne after Queen Anne, the last of the Stuarts, died without children. Although there were more than 50 other people in line before him, they were all Roman Catholic and Parliament wanted to make sure that only Protestants would be able to inherit the Crown. George could only speak German and French and he did not like living in England so spent a lot of his reign in Germany. He was not much mourned by the British people on his death in 1727, but he did manage to keep the country free from war for the whole of his reign.
