Harthacnut (AD 1018-1042) became the nominal ruler of Denmark in 1023 at the young age of 5. On the death of his father in 1035, Harthacnut was now 17 but could not leave Demark for fear of invasion from Magnus of Norway, so he appointed Harold Cnutson to govern. He divided England with his half-brother Swein, allocating the south to himself and the north to Swein. A peace agreement was reached between Harthacnut and Magnus regarding their thrones. After Harold died in March 1040, Harthacnut invaded England, was crowned in 1040, and named Edward his heir in 1041. Harthacnut died suddenly in 1042, likely from tuberculosis, allowing Magnus to claim the Danish throne, but not England, which eventually passed to Edward.
