Worcester Rich Queens Pattern Teapot c1770
A rare first period Worcester teapot and cover of faceted globular form. the domed cover with a leaf and flower finial picked out in gold. richly painted and gilded in Japan style with the “Rich Queens Pattern” . narrow finely gilded underglaze blue panels reserving mons. alternating with wider panels of dense Kakiemon foliage. Provenance: the Rous Lench collection. Christie’s. 30 May 1990. lot 512. For an extensive discussion about the use of the name ‘Queen’s Pattern’ in relation to this design see Sandon (1993). p. 273 where a very similar teapot is also illustrated. An identical teapot is in the Frank Lloyd collection see Hobson (1923). fig 66. A great many services were made in different variations of this popular design. but few were as elaborate and costly as this teapot. Height 7 inches approx to finial.
Square mark Circa 1770
Condition. A Crack to body that propagates from the handle for four inches. This is shown in the photographs but is very hard to detect. The interior of the pot has also had some restoration to disguise the crack. The crack was noted in the Bonhams catalogue The Jeremy Lever Collection 7th March 2007 Lot 127. where it sold for GBP 1560 https://m.bonhams.com/auctions/15267/lot/127/
