Marks : Painted brown pattern number ‘814’. Impressed potters number ‘224’ to both the base of the teapot and underside of the lid. Small gilders ‘gold ladder’ mark to the base. present only on early Spode.
Origin : English
Colour : White. carmine. pink and gilt
Pattern : ‘814’
Features : ‘Old oval shape’ body with typical Spode kinked loop handle. Internal domed strainer and small-scale heart-shaped pouring guards. flat panelled pouring spout. The pattern is of carmine leaves painted in a detailed dot technique. raised pink enamelled berries and gilded tendrils. Bands of gilded foliage decorate the handle. spout and lip rim.
Teapot Size : 6 inches tall by 9 ¾ inches in length
Plate Stand Size : 5/8 inches tall by 8 1/8 inches in length
Condition : Excellent. the teapot spout rim has minor fritting. the plate stand has a small chip to the underside of the rim. wear commensurate with age as shown.
Restoration : A crack in the lid of the teapot has been professionally restored. filled and colour tinted. This is undetectable without ultra violet lamps.
Weight : 845 grams

Additional Information : A truly stunning and interesting pattern adapted from Japanese ‘imari’ style and dating to Spode’s early works recorded in 1806. This pattern number (814) falls into the range of 80 nicknamed ‘candlelight patterns’. this was coined due to the platinum metal that was combined in the gilding. Platinum gave a unique rich sheen that was also found to be more durable. some admirers thought this new technique to be garish and too ‘showy’ in daylight even though it was originally designed and intended for use by candlelight. in which it looks simply mesmerizing.The most beautiful early 19th century English teapot we have offered for sale

Originally these services were sold as a complete set. so only very few pieces carry the name of Spode or identifying marks such as a pattern or potters number.
