Image : The iconic illustration of the great and good of Georgian Tunbridge Wells. gathered on the Upper Walk of The Pantiles in 1748. and identified by Samuel Richardson who has appended a numeric key.
Description : Mounted and framed
Additional Information : The full tile of the print is “The Remarkable Characters Who Were At Tunbridge Wells with Richardson in 1748. From a drawing in his possession with references in his own writing.” Clearly this infers that the image was not actually created by Mr Richardson. and the ‘Remarkable Characters’ include one who is listed as “Loggan the Artist” (David Loggan. the noted engraver. had – however – expired in 1692). Equally. the drawing has later been attributed to an Edward Francis Findon. but his lifespan extended from 1791 to 1857. Be mindful that the text on the image does not state that the picture was created in 1748 – simply that Richardson made his observations in that year…
We have recently become aware that the identity of the artist himself is likely to have been a Mr Loggan who was ‘an eccentric little artist’ who lived in a small hut at the South West corner of The Parade. and who made his living painting fans. Loggan’s hut is shown on a plan of the area drawn up under the Rusthall Manor Act dated 1739.
