Gin first rose to popularity following the arrival of William of Orange in 1688. This form is frequently described as being of Kit-Cat type. Glasses of similar form are depicted within a painting by William Hogarth of the the members of the Kit-Cat club. The portraits by Godfrey Kneller of some members also feature similar form glasses.
The club took its name from the host of the Trumpet Tavern on Shire Lane. Christopher ( Kit) Catt and his mutton pies known and Kit Cats. The site is now occupied by The Royal Courts of Justice. the skullduggery continues.
