Description

It would be my opinion that Jacob Sang (1720s-17??) is without doubt one of the best copper wheel engravers of his time. His breath-taking workmanship characterised by extremely fine elaborate detailing featuring scrollwork. plant life. heraldry and shipping scenes and polished details is at times beyond belief and cannot be reproduced today. In his day. he received commissions from across the Netherlands and was one of the few artisans who actually signed his work. Today. Jacob Sang’s engravings are highly sought after and glasses identified through his signature and workmanship can command significant sums. Only a very few are actually signed therefor the majority are attributed by comparison and understanding of his particular style especially when it comes to his lettering which is very fine indeed. It is not known where and when Jacob Sang died.his last dated signed goblet is 1783 but it seems was still engraving as well as ever in 1794.see A Concise Catalogue of signed glasses by Jacob Sang by F G A M Smit for more details.

Shown in the picture are two glasses.

On the left we have a very fine Dutch Engraved Goblet attributed to Jacob Sang which is 7 ¾ inches tall. These goblets have a passing resemblance to Berlin Cut Goblets which are all non lead metal. The example shown is in full lead and these are thought to have been made in Holland c1760. All of those recorded (very few indeed) have all been finely engraved by the same hand. Based on the engraved signature found on some ‘S J Sang’ it was originally thought that it was Jacob’s brother Simon who engraved these glasses. However. recent extensive research conducted in Holland has proved that S J Sang and Jacob Sang were in fact one and the same person. An almost identical goblet can be seen in “Engraved Glass” Masterpieces from Holland. by  Mallet and Sheppard and Cooper .London 1990 attributed at that time to S J Sang.

On the right we have a superb English Light Baluster 7 ¼ inches. which has also been very finely engraved by a Dutch hand. In every way the engravings are the equal of the glass on the left but unfortunately it cannot be attributed to a named engraver such a Jacob Sang. This is an all too common occurrence with Dutch engraved glasses despite the undeniable quality.
