Heading : Tunbridge Ware – Glovebox with Mosaic Depicting the Cloisters of Battle Abbey

Decoration : The rounded. flat-ended lid has an image of Battle Abbey’s cloisters set in sycamore. and bounded with a continuous keyline; a pair of banded and continuous keylines frame a narrow six-square geometric-pattern band; Has a broad floral Berlin Wool-work frieze to all four flat sides within the same banded and continuous keylines. Has a raised flat-disc escutcheon; Lined with the original red silk.
Size : 26.7 cm wide – 10.4 cm deep – 9.9 cm high
Condition : Very good; the tesserae are largely complete. with the exception of the outermost banded keyline on the lid. which has suffered some small losses that have been replaced or filled; all four bottom corners have suffered some damage. with a few tiles missing and resin fills having been used to effect repairs; all are stable having been lacquered; a few minor bumps and bruises and some patchy lacquer-loss here and there

Note : This view of Battle Abbey – as opposed to those of the gate house – is relatively unusual and has elsewhere been attributed to the manufactory of Henry Hollamby. having been noted on a games box (albeit unlabelled) from that same source
