This book sculpture is from a series of similar glass books produced from the mid-late 1980s. each with differently coloured mottles. andsome of slightly differening form.
The flattened top surface of a colourless molten glass block was randomly covered with multicoloured chips before another glass gob was laid on top. with the three hot layers fusing togethe. The resulting mass was then cut and polished to form an open book. Roubicek wanted to give the impression of a book that is open. revealing its contents. and the viewer/reader being on a journey reading through a book. THe mottles represent the words scattered on a page.
Each book was given its own name. many based on art movements. such as ‘Impressionism’ with others simply being named ‘Big Book’ or ‘Christmas’. Each book is entirely unique. being handmade. and is signed and dated on the back.
René Roubícek (1922-2018) was one of the leaders of the revolution in glass design and glassmaking in postware Czechoslovakia. Together with his wife. he revelled in colour and the freedom of the material. He won a Grand Prix at the 1958 Brussels Expo and taught and inspired a great many of the master glass designers who followed him.
