A ‘Berling’ was a drinking vessel used by glass workers at St Louis. Liquorice would be added to the berling and as the water warmed in hot conditions it would flavour and colour the contents. A drink was taken by sucking a pipe that was inserted into the bowl.
When Daum sued Delatte in 1925 for copying their Berluze design the court ruled in favour of Delatte as this was not a Daum original but based on an ancient design.
