Robert Lewis Sutherland was born in Glasgow and trained at the Glasgow School of Art. the Académie Délécluse in Paris. and the Royal College of Art in London. The date of this piece. 1914. of course marked the begining of the First World War. these quaint rural scenes that the British public lived in would never be the same again. As a literature lover and historian I cannot help but be reminded of Larkin’s famous MCMXIV when looking at this piece. Here is a short extract :
And the countryside not caring:
The place-names all hazed over
With flowering grasses. and fields
Shadowing Domesday lines
Under wheat’s restless silence;
The differently-dressed servants
With tiny rooms in huge houses.
The dust behind limousines;
Never such innocence.
Never before or since.
As changed itself to past
Without a word – the men
Leaving the gardens tidy.
The thousands of marriages
Lasting a little while longer:
Never such innocence again.
