Description
Duke of Wellington Champagne Flute c1820
This is a Duke of Wellington pattern champagne flute c1820. named after the hero and twice Prime Minister. It will surprise many that the great Arthur Wellesley was an Irishman! The pattern is named after him as he is reputed to have ordered a set. Purchased as part of a collection in Wicklow Ireland it may well be Irish in origin. but the same pattern was made in England and northern Europe.
Technically this glass has a long funnel bowl. known as a flute with a short plain stem with an angular knop. above a plain foot with a polished pontil. Lead glass and with no chips or cracks or restoration. It stands 7 7/8th inches tall with 2 1/4 inch bowl and 2 3/5ths foot.
What better way can there be than to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his greatest day on 18th June 2015 with champagne in a period “Duke of Wellington” flute?
