Size and Weight: 125 x 56 mm

Features and Provenance: From an Essex collection, found on the Thames foreshore by a ‘mudlark’ (a person similar to a detectorist the sifts through the Thames mud for  artefacts and coin).

The belt hanger was designed to lie flat against a leather garment. The decorative loops would have held a leather strap, which would have held the owner’s sword. Swords were not commonly wielded by the lower classes, so this would have almost certainly belonged to an officer, or at least a wealthy mercenary. How this ended up in the Thames is anybody’s guess but conjures up thoughts of intrigue and ne’er-do-wells.
