John Deacons trained at Strathearn Glass where paperweights were being made in the tradition reintroduced into Scotland in the 1930s. and where many of our leading makers started. He was one of those workers who left Strathearn to join Stuart Drysdale’s band of dedicated makers when Teachers Whisky. which bought the Strathearn in 1969. had no the interest in the production quality paperweights.
John stayed with the newly formed Perthshire Paperweights. where his work is well documented. until 1980 when he left to develop his own ideas. forming J Glass. This was named not after himself. but for the famous. then mysterious. 19th century Czech glassworks which signed its weights with a “J.” This venture flourished. and his little “J” weights of that period are much sought after. He also produced weights for St Kilda Island with a StK. John. however. prefers the freedom of working alone. making small batches of a design. and ran a one man show until his son Craig joined him to continue the family tradition into the 21st century.
