The Dutch and in Dutch East India Company were the international trading powerhouses of the 17th and early 18th century, a consistent and respected form of money was needed when trading internationally, the Ducat was the perfect coin. Although it was initially minted in Venice from 1285, it was struck in Utrecht from 1583 and other mints thereafter changing very little in design. Willem I of the Netherlands was on the throne the year this coin is dated, but not for long. In 1806 Napoleon Bonaparte took his lands after he supported Prussia instead of France and the ducat was no longer minted.
