Bowl : Round funnel; engraved with initials HS within a radiant. circular cartouche to one side . and with a carnation and foliage on the reverse
Stem : Plain stem with an annular collar knop. over a hollow round knop and a broad angular knop

Condition : Excellent. no chips or cracks; a single small bubble to the solid part of the stem and some mossing to the foot

Note: The knop contains a 1677 Charles II ‘thruppence’; if one is to take on board the Jacobite sympathies of the carnation. it would seem to be an inauspicious year for the cause at first glance. but it was actually when the daughter of the future King James II was married to William of Orange and thus set in motion the whole protracted chain of events which lead directly to the 1689 Jacobite uprising and all others that ensued. The union with Mary further legitimised William’s claim to the English and Scottish thrones. and lead to him being ‘nominated’ by the instigators of 1688’s Glorious Revolution to lead the venture. The successful conclusion of William’s campaign was to depose his uncle. who fled in to exile. It was then the simmering support for James’ restoration which became the prime directive of the entire Jacobite cause – Bonny Prince Charlie. 1745. the whole ignoble enterprise – all of which can be traced back to the nuptials of 1677. given yet more resonance with regard to our glass if one considers that the monogram may with a small flight of fancy represent the House (of) Stuart…
