The half gill was a standard measure in both Ireland and Scotland for whiskey an whisky. but not in England. Bizarrely in England this was a standard measure for the more potent rum. This pre-dates the Weights and Measures Act of 1878 and the Richardson patent of 1875.
This will prevent the highly variable “home measure” from consuming the entire Christmas ration before lunch
