Description

A superb tall Georgian Ale Glass which dates to between 1750 and 1775.

This is quite possibly a unique piece. It is an extremely tall ale glass that stands over 15 1/2 inches tall. It was held in a private collection with other period glasses at an estate in Dunbartonshire. We have shown this to a number of glass experts including the curators at the V and A in London and the consensus is that it is 3rd quarter of the 18th cen. We have seen similar large period examples in this style in both opaque twist and facet cut forms.

The shoulder annulated collar or mereses if you prefer is a Scottish feature. opaque twist and air twist wines (of standard size) with similar collars are attributed to the Edinburgh and Leith glass works. On 6th June 2003 Phillips sold a glass of identical form as part of the Carson collection of British ceremonial goblets. Lot 25 looks like it has a triple merese (difficult to tell from the picture) and stood 39.5 cm tall. which is exactly the same height as our glass. The auction note suggests it was possibly one of a set made for a gentleman’s club and could contain almost a pint of strong ale. The date given was c1760.

The glass has an excellent colour. striations. tooling and inclusions with fold lines (stop start marks) that collectors demand.

A piece of such stature will literally rise head and shoulders above most other period glasses in a collection. It has a 2 5/8th bowl with a 3 13/16ths foot. No chips or cracks or restoration.
