Features and Provenance:
Christian was born in 1577 and became king of Denmark and Norway at the age of 11 but was not crowned until 1596. He became known for his lavish parties and his coronation was no different; it is said that the fountain in Copenhagen ran with wine for several hours. He was king for 52 years and is famous for his building works and being a ‘bon vivant’; he fathered at least 21 children, 18 from his two marriages. He died in 1648.
