James IV (17th March 1473) was king of Scotland from 1488 to 1513. He gained his crown by deposing his father; an act which haunted James his whole life and led to his great piety. James was an exceedingly cultured man, irresistible to women and is commonly regarded as the most successful Stuart monarch. Relations with England improved with the Treaty of Perpetual Peace in 1502 and James’s marriage to Margaret Tudor in 1503, which led to the Union of the Crowns in 1603. He was killed in battle during the battle of Flodden against Queen Katherine of Aragon in 1513.
