Features and Provenance:
Stephan (Stefan or Istvan) Bocskai was a Hungarian nobleman brought up in the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian. He was elected Prince of Transylvania and Hungary in 1605 after leading a successful uprising against the Habsburg oppression. He refused to be king, wanting to keep autonomy, even when supported by the Ottoman empire. The Sultan Ahmed sent him a magnificently bejewelled crown to encourage him, but he would only accept it as a gift. During his short reign, he also negotiated freedom for Protestants to practice their religion. He died in 1606, possibly by poisoning. Our coin was minted posthumously.
