The Art of Rene Lalique by Patricia Bayer & Mark Waller Pg. 143 Pl. 257
The 1920s and early 1930s mark the highpoint in Rene Lalique’s production. astonishing considering he was already past sixty. 1934 was a difficult year in France’s history. Hit by the Great Depression later than most countries France was in a state of disarray for much of the decade with the 6th of February 1934 crisis ending with fifteen far right anti-parliamentarians being shot and killed by the police. In spite of the great disquiet and poverty in France Lalique continued to produce astonishing works of art. This vase. intricately decorated with storks and reeds. displays a level of quality and decadence entirely inappropriate for the time but entirely appropriate for a collection.
