Description

This Georgian glass has the same double walled form as many trick glasses. In the trick glass the base of the inner bowl usually has a small hole through which liquid poured into the inner bowl would seep into the outer bowl. We have found quite a few of these filled with dark liquids that had never been released. We believe that these were glasses for simple propositions such as a bet that the contents could not be consumed. We have also had some double skinned tumblers that are simply “deceptive”. This may simply be a double skinned deceptive dram glass. perhaps the purchasor was intended to drill a small hole in the base. The reduced weight may have arisen from the imposition of the glas tax. It is also possible that this was intended to be an inkwell. but it would highly unusual for them not to have a lid.

Bulbous body with an inserted well which has a snapped pontil at the base. Applied foot with a  further snapped pontil.

English lead. no chips cracks or restoration. it measures 2 ¼ inches tall approx. 2 ¾ inch in diameter at the widest point. This is certainly unusual.
