Tinctures  including those containing opium were dispensed by the drop and were to be diluted with alcohol. We tried an 18th century recipe for one which included sherry. ginger root. cinnamon and saffron. we omitted the opium. What we can say is that it tasted similar to sweet spiced rum and was really delicious and must have been intended to mask the taste of the omitted ingredient.

This is the finest example we have offered for sale.
