Heading : A pair of cut glass ice plates
Period : George III 1790- 1820
Origin : England ir Ireland
Colour : Clear . grey-blue hue
Bowl : Rib cut upper rim. above a terrace of prismatic cuts on the underside.
Foot : 16 point star cut
Glass Type : Lead 
Size : Diameter 18cm
Condition :. Minor nibbles and fritting to the rims. The condition is remarkable when you consider their intended use. Small pieces of clinker throughout.

These are deceptively weighty. The glass is intentionally thick to act as an insulator. Ice plates were used as stands for wine rinsers and also to contain ice that was used to chill butter and cream that was served on ice in silver dishes. They would also act as coasters for decanters and could be used to chill the contents.
