Description

Pair Victorian Air Twist Champagne Flutes c1900

A pair of champagne flutes with a story to tell. Most British glass producers made replica Georgian glasses in late Victorian and early 20th century. Whitefriars. Richardsons. Leith and many others. These were not made with the intention to deceive. unlike some of the output from Mrs Graydon Stannus. but they did use period tools and methods. It is difficult sometimes to detect what are a genuine period glasses and a later copy. We have borrowed a genuine Georgian domed foot champagne flute and put it alongside the two later versions.

The greyish colour of the glass is matched; probably the result of “doping”. the tool marks and striations are all there. However. they do not have any inclusions in the glass. no seeds. stones or soot particles. gas fired furnaces are cleaner than charcoal or sea coal. The feet may be domed but a Georgian domed foot is still conical on its outer edge before it rises up into the dome. on later copies the outer edge of the foot is quite flat and the wear on the base is considerably inside the outer edge of the foot. The pontil scar is wrong too; the stem also does not show any “ribs” the result of the period twist stem being rolled as it was formed. Finally. you would not detect this from pictures. they are simply too light for a period glass.

They are 9 ½ inches tall with 2 ½ inch bowls and 3 ½ inch domed feet.  No chips. cracks or restoration. English lead.
