This glass was the work of “engraver A” identified by the 2 looped inner petals with scalloped outer petals. The meaning of the individual rosebud is somewhat harder to answer as there are several schools of thought on the matter. In his book The Jacobites and Their Drinking Glasses Geoffrey Seddon puts forward three distinct interpretations.

The first is the “old” theory suggests that the removal of the second bud reflects Prince Henry’s decision to enter the Church in 1747 and that the main rose represents James. the Old Pretender.

Other theories come from Horridge and Barrington Haynes who both argue that the rose refers to the crown of England and the rosebud refers the Old Pretender. They state that the single bud examples are earlier than the double budded glasses.

Whatever interpretation you support this is a fantastic piece of historically significant glass.
