Features and Provenance: During the 1890’s a gold rush in South Africa resulted in precious metals flooding into the region. Johannes Paulus Kruger. the president at the time. took advantage of this and the region became a world leader in coin production and the economy boomed. The Pond was struck to the same specifications as the British Sovereign. equalling 20 shillings. and later became known as the now famous Krugerrand.
