This form with thick pillar moulding evolved in Normandy and Brittany in the early 19th century. Early examples have flared rims. Both regions became immensely popular in the second half of the 19th century with the Parisian well-to-do. These were almost certainly made for the tourist trade ” think of me”. These are very weighty and tactile tumblers perfect for a large whisky and water.
