Features and Provenance: Augustus (Octavian) was the founder and first emperor of the Roman Empire. He is arguably one of the best emperors and ruled from 27 BC to 14 AD. He married three time but had only one daughter who could not take the throne. He adopted his grandsons and finally. begrudgingly. Tiberius. his stepson. as his heirs. but only Tiberius survived to take the throne.
The large SC on the reverse of the coin means ‘Senatus Consulto’ ‘by decree of the Senate’. The value of the copper was less than the value of the denomination therefore the Senate had to declare that it was supported as legal. Silver and gold coins were the actual value of their denominations. Asinius Gallus was a good friend to Augustus but after his death. he was not well liked by the new emperor. Tiberius. and in fact managed to publicly embarrass him. For this misdemeanour he was put into solitary confinement and he eventually died of starvation.
