Features and Provenance: Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was born in the year 12 to a Roman general and heir to Emperor Tiberius. Germanicus. He was given the nickname ‘Caligula’ (‘little military boot’) by the army as he wore a child-sized soldier’s uniform whilst on campaign with his father. He became emperor in 37. A popular ruler for the first seven months of his reign. he changed after falling ill. perhaps the result of poison. He exiled and executed political opponents and family members alike. and nearly emptied the treasury with his extravagancies. On trying to raise funds by unpopular means through raising taxes and property seizures. he was assassinated in 41 by the Praetorian Guard after declaring himself a god.
